Did you know that scientists are discovering certain properties within fruits and vegetables that may actually boost your body's ability to prevent disease? Scientists have known for some time that in the body highly reactive molecules called free radicals do serious damage to your cells. And there is increasing scientific evidence that links this free radical damage to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

That's where the "anti-oxidants" come in. Studies show that anti-oxidants help protect against this harmful cell damage. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of antioxidant fruits and vegetables and lowering fat intake can help fortify your body's defense against disease and support health!

But, the facts reveal many of us are not able on a consistent daily basis to consume these levels of antioxidant nutrients. Daily's Anti-Oxidant provides optimal levels of support.

Men have higher levels of stored iron than women and occasionally even excessive levels. Studies have linked high blood levels of iron with increased incidence of heart disease. Consequently, unless there is a specific diagnosis of iron deficiency and/or anemia an intake of iron supplements may lead to an increase in production of free radicals. Therefore, men should not take iron supplements. Most multivitamin supplements contain iron because they are not formulated specifically with men's needs in mind. Daily's for men provides a balanced level of important vitamins and minerals needed for a man's good health.

Try Daily's Complete Multiple Vitamin Mineral Supplement for doctor recommended nutritional protection.

Research:
  • Most people think of osteoporosis as a disease of women only, according to a survey commissioned by the National Osteoporosis Foundation. But in fact, men do suffer from bone loss. As they age, one quarter of all hip fractures in this country occur in men. About one in every eight men will eventually suffer some kind of bone fracture caused by bone thinning. For the prevention of bone loss the recommendation of calcium supplements by the Council of Responsible Nutrition and Dr. Daily is 1000mg/day
  • Studies show that vitamin E lowers the risk of heart disease, enhances immunity and shows the onset of Alzheimer's
  • Evidence from several lines of research indicates that, for most people, it makes sense to follow a healthy lifestyle, eat a healthful diet, and use nutritional supplements regularly.

Large dietary studies reveal that over half of all women in this country are falling short of the essential amounts of several essential nutrients. The council for Responsible Nutrition notes that calcium intake is consistently lower in women than in men, and that increasing calcium intake to 1500 mg per day for both pre- and post-menopausal women, helps protect against the development of osteoporosis.

Research shows that women have only half of the iron levels of men. Iron may lead to anemia and reduce energy.

Folic acid (a B vitamin) also called folate or folacin is another important vitamin that has received a lot of attention in scientific studies. It has been shown that levels of folic acid may significantly increase a women's risk of cervical cancer and neural tube defects in pregnancy.

Research:

  • New research has found that folate not only plays a key role in preventing anemia and certain types of birth defects but now has shown that it might prevent heart disease in adults by lowering levels of an artery-damaging substance known as homocysteine
  • It is impossible to get the proper amounts of certain nutrients in a one-a-day multiple tablet. For example, the recommended amount of calcium cannot be absorbed from a single dose
  • A detailed study of the USDA National Food Consumption Survey showed that more than 70% of females consumed less than the RDA calcium, magnesium and iron

Daily's Multiple Vitamin Mineral Supplement For Women:

  • Optimal calcium, magnesium, boron for bone preservation, high in folic acid, and iron

Daily Food Supplements, Inc., Corporate Profile
By Penni Crabtree
San Diego Business Journal Staff Writer Originally Printed on February 28, 1994

In almost everything Dr. Pat O. Daily does, one glimpses the shadow of the serious, methodical 11-year-old boy who once built a ham radio from bits and pieces.

Daily, a respected San Diego cardiovascular surgeon, has the habit of seizing on a thing and rebuilding it. It's a practice that is transforming him into a one-man, health care conglomerate. Frustrated by imperfect medical devices used in open-heart surgery, Daily formed a company that designs and markets its own.

In search of a healthy meal, Daily opened the successful Daily's Fit & Fresh Restaurant in 1991, a concept that is now being franchised. And, convinced of the health benefits of vitamins, Daily launched a retail line of vitamins this year.

Daily is, in the best possible sense, a terminal tinkerer. It is a deep-set trait he acknowledges without pride or apology.

"If I find something that I need and it's not out there, I make it. I like precision, I like precise things"
"It's probably at bottom, a control issue; I've been told control is a characteristic of mine."

Driven by a need for control - or just a desire to understand and then improve things - Daily is a thriving contradiction; a doctor with a head for business.

Against the Stereotype
It is a time honored stereotype in the medical community that physicians, as a professional breed, may be skilled in the operating room but are all thumbs in the business world.

"Most doctors go to medical school, learn something difficult like cardiac surgery, and then begin to think that everything else is simple," says Dr. Allan Goodman, a local cardiovascular surgeon and colleague of Daily's. "They think 'if I can do surgery, I can do a business or invest in the stock market,' and the result is often disastrous."

Goodman credits Daily's upbringing in a business-minded family, and "engineer's mind," and an ability to hire good business associates for his friend's success.

"When I wanted a satellite dish, I hired a guy to come out and install it," Goodman recalls. "When Pat bought one, he put it together, installed it, and dealt with it until he understood it from A to Z."

"Pat wants to understand things. He has a desire to dissect a thing down to its basics."

Daily's skill as both surgeon and businessman comes almost as a birthright. The only son of a physician father, Daily grew up in a tiny (population 3,000) Oklahoma town where hard work and enterprise was the community creed.

Background
Daily earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago, interrupted his studies for a two-year stint in the Air Force, and then took up a residency in cardiovascular surgery at Stanford University.

It was at Stanford in 1968 that Daily first got the idea for his restaurant. But it was more than two decades before the idea was realized.

"It was apparent that it would be easier to prevent heart disease than to operate, and one of the key elements of preventions would be a low-fat diet," says Daily. "At the time, the closes a restaurant got to a low-fat meal was the occasional vegetarian menu, which back then, was never very appetizing or extensive."

"The idea remained in the back of my mind. Over the years, it began to nag at me."

Meanwhile, Daily's surgical career prospered. he served as a professor of surgery at Stanford, then as a professor and director of cardiac surgery at the UCSD Medical Center. In 1981, Daily left UCSD to become director of cardiovascular surgery at Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he remains.

Tinkering with Device
It was after leaving UCSD that Daily began tinkering with the notion of a cardiac cooling jacket. The "jacket" is a device, marketed in a number of variations, that is wrapped around the heart during surgery to keep the organ cool.

Daily, who performs hundreds of open-heart surgeries a year, says he became frustrated by inefficiencies and the clumsy design of the devices.

So he designed his own. Now the Daily jacket is sold nationally and internationally through Daily Medical Products. Two more medical devices are almost ready for market and three more are in development, says Daily.

In 1989, Daily turned his attention to his old love: the notion of a "heart-healthy" restaurant. He hired Patty Milligan, then a Sharp Memorial Hospital staff dietician for cardiac patients, to help develop a menu to fit Daily's low-fat/low-calorie goals.

Daily also hired a restaurant consulting firm in San Francisco to develop the restaurant format and design, and fine-tuned the menu with the aide of several chefs. In March 1991, the restaurant opened in the Golden Triangle area.

"Most in the restaurant business open a restaurant to make money, so they are more inclined to stick to the tried-and-true formats," says Daily. "I thought of this as an experiment, but I believed in it enough to try."

The belief has apparently paid off. Though Daily declines to discuss revenues, he says the restaurant was profitable after its first three months. An average of 2,500 customers come to Daily's each week to indulge in such low-calorie, low-fat items as three-bean chili and turkey gumbo.

Daily then launched a retail venture: Daily's Food Supplements, Inc.. Like the restaurant, the idea for a line of vitamin supplements emerged from Daily's study of cardiovascular medical research. Daily started reading about antioxidants in medical literature years ago. Several large clinical studies on the subject cinched his growing enthusiasm for the subject.

While it is recognized that the traditional daily allowance of vitamins can counter acute diet deficiencies, recent studies indicate that higher intakes can combat everything from cancer to hear disease.

For example, two Harvard studies concluded that vitamin E can help prevent heart disease, in some cases reducing the risk by 40 percent.

Particularly beneficial, according to some studies, are so-called antioxidants: vitamin C and E, and beta carotene, a form of vitamin A with its own special properties. Some medical studies show these vitamins can help neutralize free radicals, molecules that are implicated in some 60 age-related diseases, including cancer and heart disease.

In past years, the medical community had often dismissed the idea that vitamins were appreciably beneficial. The prevailing wisdom was that supplements merely generated "the world's most expensive urine," says Daily.

Now the growing body of medical research is hard to argue with.

"I didn't recommend supplements to patients, though I have taken vitamins for the last 15 years," says Daily. "But what the studies have shown in the last few years is pretty convincing."

Devising His Own Formula
Daily researched dozens of commercial antioxidants on the market, and found that none of them fit his three criteria: correct dosage, correct combination of vitamins, and all-in-one pill.

Daily devised his own formula, hired a Pittsburgh firm to manufacture it, and took it to the market. Daily's antioxidants multivitamins are sold in local outlets such as Henry's Market, Whole Foods, Hutman's, Jimbo's Naturally, Daily's Restaurant, and several local pharmacies, as well as mail-order.

In all his business ventures, Daily strives to keep himself immune from any taint of professional conflict of interest. Daily says he does not sell products from his private practice adjacent to Sharp Memorial Hospital, and he does not recommend them to patients.

As a result, there is surprisingly little envy or raised eyebrows among his fellow physicians, according to Goodman.

"People know Pat doesn't need to do this for the money," says Goodman. "One thing they expect from him, which he complies with ,is that he doesn't do anything that can come back and construed as quackery."

"And people trust Pat, they know that he won't."

Creating Something Useful
Daily says his motivation in all his business ventures has been to create something useful for himself or his profession.

"I never had an interest in business to make money," Daily says. "Some people say 'I want to make money, what can I do?' I say 'I need this thing for myself or my field, how can I create it and make it financially viable?'"

Daily concedes, however, that he has taken great care that all his businesses prove profitable.

Because of so much consumer interest, Dr. Daily has formulated two new products that are now available: WOMEN'S multiple vitamin/mineral plus anti-oxidant, and MEN'S multiple vitamin/mineral plus anti-oxidant. Dr. Daily reviews the nutritional research to formulate supplements that provide the correct "DAILY" allowance for vitamins and minerals in the proper ratio and potency. It is important to Daily to have all nutrients from the purest, all natural ingredients for maximum bioavailability and benefit.
