History :: Daily's - The Beginning
         
    It all began with one man's simple realization, "It must be easier to prevent heart disease than to operate." And just like that, the idea for Daily's Restaurant was born!

As most of you know, Daily's namesake originates from owner/founder, Dr. Pat O. Daily, director of cardiovascular surgery at Sharp Memorial Hospital. But what you may not know is how a young Daily took the simple idea of preventing heart disease to the next level by creating Daily's Restaurant.

It was in 1968 when Daily first got the notion that when it came to preventing heart disease (among a number of other health problems), medicine was just a piece of the healthcare puzzle. It was apparent to Daily that it would be much easier to prevent disease through a well-balanced, low-fat diet than to operate. Unfortunately, Daily found that there weren't many options for those who wanted to eat healthy. Back then the closest thing to a healthy meal was the occasional vegetarian menu, which didn't have much appeal, or taste, for that matter.

However, at that time, Daily was busy starting his medical career and put the idea for the health food restaurant in the back of his mind.

Over the years, Daily's career flourished. He had been a professor of surgery at Stanford University, professor and director of cardiac surgery at UCSD Medical Center, and even a designer/creator of innovative medical devices. And, in 1981, Daily became director of cardiovascular surgery at Sharp Healthcare, where he continues to practice today.

It wasn't till 1989 that Daily turned his attention to that nagging voice in his head...a quick food restaurant that offers an innovative menu designed with cutting-edge nutritional concepts using fresh and flavorful foods!

To create Daily's Restaurant, Daily started by hiring a team of experts including a culinary professional, dietitian and a restaurateur. Together, they developed a menu that would meet the high standards of Dr. Daily's low-fat/low calorie diet. In March 1992, Daily's Restaurant opened its doors in the Golden Triangle area. The rest is history!

Today, the restaurant continues to be very successful and, of course, that's partly due to the tasty, low-fat food, but the real reason for that success lies in the people behind the scenes.

From the beginning, Daily's has held true to its mission: to educate the public of the benefits to eating healthy and provide a truly innovative menu of "heart healthy" foods prepared to be both delicious as well as nutritious!
